Opened in 1965 and located 25 miles north of Durango, Colorado, Purgatory is famous for its stepped mountain and for being a great family ski area. In the summer, it hosts a mountain coaster and various warm season activities. A few years ago, Purgatory changed their name to Durango Mountain Resort - to much public backlash, warranting the name to be changed back to the well-known and iconic Purgatory. Durango is also home to Fort Lewis College, making Purgatory a popular collegiate destination.
