1951 Ashcroft, the Silver Mining Ghost Town Near Aspen Ski Photo (3 Sizes)
Back in 1951, Ashcroft was a partially restored mining ghost town that featured dog-sledding, ski touring, snowshoeing and a peaceful backcountry place to hang out and enjoy winter's pristine beauty. We are guessing that one of the above activities attracted well-known professional photographers, Dick and Miggs Durrance to this place on a sunny winter's day in 1951.
Ashcroft is located up Castle Creek Rd, in the Elk Mountain range around 12 miles from Aspen. It remains a year around tourist destination with all of the above mentioned features. Plus, it now has the delicious Pine Creek Cook House (a remote log cabin), a wonderful gift shop, the restored mining town buildings to tour, and beautiful hiking & cross country skiing trails. In the winter one arrives at the Pine Creek Cook House via a horse drawn sleigh ride or by cross country skiing.
