Franz Klammer Lauberhorn World Cup Ski Race 1976 Vintage Ski PosterFamous Austrian Franz Klammer won Gold at the Lauberhorn World Cup Ski Race in 1975, 1976 and 1977! This image is from his 1976 Lauberhorn race, but all were marked by his 'almost out of control' style or as his coach Bob Beattie called it, skiing on the 'edge of disaster'. The Lauberhorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, located above the Wengen ski resort and not far from Grindelwald, north of the Kleine Scheidegg. This downhill course is the longest in the world; its enormous length of 4.455 km (2.768 mi) results in run times of two and a half minutes (about 30-45 seconds longer than standard downhill races). The race course drops 1000m vertically and racers hit speeds approaching the Ski Federations maximum top speed limit of 150 to 160 km/h (yes, that's over 90 to 100 mile per hour !).
