Located near Nice and the Italian border in the southeastern region of France, Peira-Cava began as a farm village. In the late 19th century, French troops began to be stationed in the village, as it had potential as a strategic outpost thanks to its being located close to the Italian border. Soon after the military's arrival, many of Nice's middle class residents at the time sought the village out as a place to try skiing for the first time. The popularity of Peira-Cava grew, and a short chairlift and drag lift were built to serve the 60 meters of vertical terrain offered there. The ski area eventually closed due to a lack of snow and a general decline in interest. Today, what remains of the slope and chairlift can still be seen from Peira-Cava's main road!
