Chairlift 1 opened on Aspen Mountain in January, 1947, and is one of the top three classic ski lifts of North America. The lift was also known as 'the longest ski lift in the world,' as advertised on a big banner during the opening ceremonies. It had a single seat, with a blanket that folded over the rider when they closed the sissy bar. The lift has been upgraded but is still located in essentially the same location, and now known as Lift 1A. Parts of the original historic lift remain standing just below the newer lift.
